Career Women and the Durability of Marriage∗

چکیده
We study the relationship between divorce rates and female labor force attachment in the US. Recent cross-sectional evidence from US states displays a robust negative correlation between divorce and the rate of married female labor force participation. We suggest that this pattern can be explained at least partly by increased bargaining flexibility within two-earner as against one-earner households. Two-earner households can use cash rather than less efficient in-kind or promised transfers to re-adjust intrahousehold allocations when compensating for preference shocks or changes in outside opportunities, rendering their marriages more durable. Using retrospective and longitudinal data, we show that all else equal, there is a lower propensity to divorce among families in which the wife is a “career woman,” i.e. has a higher labor force attachment, though these families seem to display no lower incidence of marital difficulties. We discuss policy implications of our findings.

Career Choice, Marriage-Timing, and the Attraction of Unequals Both men and women wish to have a family and a rewarding career. Since investing in a highpowered career imposes time strain, it precludes early participation in the...
متن کاملAre There Gains to Delaying Marriage? The Effect of Age at First Marriage on Career Development and Wages
Age at first marriage has risen dramatically since the mid-1960s among a wide spectrum of the U.S. population. Researchers have considered many possible explanations for this trend. Few, though, have asked why individuals should want to delay marriage in the first place. One possibility is that early marriage inhibits the career development of one or both individuals in a marriage. We test this...

I expand Gary Becker’s market analysis of marriage behavior to derive a set of new implications about marriage and education. In my model, people can make college and career investments to improve their income and marriage prospects before they enter the marriage market. In the overlapping-generations marriage market, men are characterized by income, and women are characterized by income and re...

Unlike their counterparts in most industrialized societies, Japanese women are spending an increasingly longer proportion of their young adult years unmarried and living with parents. In this paper, we develop hypotheses linking the “comforts of home” to later marriage in Japan. To evaluate these hypotheses, we use six waves of data from a panel survey of young women to estimate hazard models f...
